You are right. I applied to two Ivys: Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania. I was deferred ED from UPenn and the rejected in the RD round. I was waitlisted at Cornell, but didn't bother filling out the form. Does this mean my advice is useless? That because I can't get into the Ivy League, I am not qualified to give advice? Absolutely not.

There is something that you must understand about the college application process. Unless you have crazy internal connections, there will ALWAYS be a chance you do not get into an Ivy League school. Why? Because schools like this receive so many applications from top-tier students that it almost becomes a lottery-like system.

Does that mean you should just give up because the system is flawed? No. If you are reading this, it means that you have big ambitions and want to get into a top university to help fulfill your dreams. Just like anything worthwhile in life, success isn't guaranteed. You can put in thousands of hours of work to attempt to get into your dream school and still get rejected. Just like how people put in thousands of hours to start a company, yet end up with nothing. But the important part? It's that you tried. If I never even attempted to get into the Ivy League or any T20 school and just said the system was flawed to begin with, I would've never been able to get into the schools I got into.

And for the record, I applied as a CS major to all the schools I applied to besides NYU Stern, UT Austin, and UPenn. CS on its own is a much harder major to get into because of its demand. Despite this, I was still able to get into four T10 CS schools, including UW Seattle CS and Georgia Tech as an out-of-state student. UW Seattle has a 2% out-of-state acceptance rate, and Georgia Tech's is below 10%.
